How do I install SnapShot?
Installation of PatchAnalyzer is very easy and takes only minutes. Simply download the installation package and follow the prompts. Refer to the product Quick Start Guide for help getting started using the product.

How do I use SnapShot work to perform a security checkup?
SnapShot performs an analysis of the installed patches, products, and licenses on the OpenVMS system. To perform an analysis, follow these easy steps:

  1. Install and launch SnapShot
  2. In the Host field type in the IP address or DNS name of the host OpenVMS server.
  3. In the Username field type in your OpenVMS account username.
  4. In the Password field type in your OpenVMS account password.
  5. If you wish to save the host information, once the host name has been entered into the Host field, click the ADD button. To remove a host, select the host in the Host Information box and click the DEL button.
  6. The Connection Time-Out setting specifies how long the application should attempt to connect to the host, and is listed in seconds with the default as 30.
  7. In the Protocol field, select the type of connection you wish to use.
  8. In the firewall settings, enter the firewall prompt and the reply to the firewall prompt.
  9. Click Connect to connect to the OpenVMS system.
  10. Click Action > Perform Test to analyze the OpenVMS system.

What type of user interface is provided for SnapShot?
SnapShot provides a graphical user interface (GUI) that where you can enter the information required to connect to your OpenVMS system and review the vulnerability information.

Does SnapShot install any code on the OpenVMS system?
No, SnapShot does not install any code on the OpenVMS system.

What information does SnapShot gather from the OpenVMS system?
SnapShot gathers account data, file protection settings and system parameter settings from your OpenVMS system.

How do I see a detailed listing of the analysis results?
Because SnapShot is a free tool, it does not include the details behind the vulnerability analysis. To perform a comprehensive audit and view all available detail, take a look at our PointAudit product.

Can I save the results produced by SnapShot?
No, you can not currently save the results, however you can print them by selecting File > Print Results.

What benefits would I get by using PointAudit in addition to SnapShot?
While SnapShot helps you audit the OpenVMS system, it does not provide detailed results of the analysis.

PointSecure PointAudit is an OpenVMS auditing tool that analyzes user account settings, file protection settings and system settings to ensure compliance with your corporate IT security policies. With PointAudit, not only can you view the privileges of particular users or groups, but you can also see all of the account settings such as flags, quotas, access types, etc. In addition to the user account analysis, PointAudit also collects and evaluates file security and system security settings and provides ways to remediate vulnerabilities.

What are the system requirements and prerequisites for SnapShot?
SnapShot requires:

  • Telnet access to your OpenVMS host
  • Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) v 2.5 or higher (To obtain a the most recent copy of MDAC or Internet Explorer, go to www.microsoft.com/downloads
  • Internet Explorer v 5.0 or higher
  • A supported OS (link to OS FAQ)

What Windows security permissions are recommended when using SnapShot?
A windows domain account with local administrator privileges is required to install PatchAnalyzer. A windows domain account with local user privileges is required to run SnapShot.

What OpenVMS security permissions are required to use SnapShot?
The account you use to connect to an OpenVMS system should have system privileges.

What versions of OpenVMS does SnapShot support?
SnapShot supports the following versions of OpenVMS:

  • I64 – OpenVMS 8.3
  • I64 – OpenVMS 8.2
  • Alpha OpenVMS 8.3
  • Alpha OpenVMS 8.2

What if I am trying to connect to a system behind a firewall?
If you are trying to connect to a system that is behind a firewall, you need to make sure that Telnet port 23 is opened to allow you to connect to your VMS system.
